“HERD FOR GOOD” – us giving back
At West Country Surveyors, we spend our days looking closely at homes, land, and the details that help people feel secure about where they live. But we also believe that being “good” at what we do should extend beyond our reports and recommendations. It should mean being good neighbours, good supporters, and good contributors to the world around us.
And yes, given our company strapline, “We’re good, just ask the cows,” we couldn’t resist having a little fun with that idea!
So our charitable programme became Herd for Good: a light-hearted nod to the cows in our branding, with a very genuine heart behind it.
Why we created Herd for Good:
The name has a playful edge, but the intention is sincere. A herd looks after its own, and that’s the kind of spirit we want to reflect. Through Herd for Good, we set aside a dedicated pot of money each year, dividing it into smaller meaningful donations. Each contribution is made with thought, purpose, and a focus on creating real and lasting benefit where it’s needed most.
Some of the things we’ve done, and what’s coming next:
Herd for Good has already taken us in meaningful directions, and we have more planned for the year ahead.
Recently, we have been proud to sponsor the team shirts for the Shepton Mallet Football Club Under-13s. The excitement at season start was proof enough that this act meant something real to the young players.
Looking ahead we have two specific projects we’re especially excited about:
- Buying a cow for a family in the developing world, providing a long-term source of milk, income and stability.
- Funding a day’s specialist thatching course for two final year trainee surveyors, giving them hands-on experience in a traditional craft and helping support the next generation entering our profession.
Each act, whether completed or upcoming, shares the same purpose: to lift someone up, open a door, or offer support that lasts well beyond the moment.
What guides us:
Herd for Good isn’t about virtue signalling. It’s about keeping our eyes open to needs in the community (local or global) and stepping in when we can help. We look for opportunities that build confidence, teach skills, create stability, or simply brighten someone’s day.
We believe giving should feel genuine, practical, and personal. Herd for Good is our way of sharing what we have, staying true to who we are, and living up to our motto… with a little help from the cows of course!
